STEM Equals + RKES IAA Funding Call

The STEM Equals project invites University of Strathclyde academic staff to register your interest in the STEM Equals + RKES IAA Funding Call. We invite applications for up to £10,000 of internal pump-priming funding for collaborative projects that are within the remit of EPSRC’s research areas. The funding call and the event are open to staff in all Departments in the University.

Purpose: Fostering research that builds on the connections between inclusion and diversity in STEM and more innovative solutions for addressing climate change.

About: The EPSRC funded STEM Equals project and RKES, with EPSRC IAA funding, are hosting a workshop on Wednesday 8th July 2020 in advance of COP26 (rescheduled for 1st-12th November 2021) in order to bring together diverse, multi-disciplinary teams from across the University to explore the impact that diverse and inclusive research communities can have on creating innovative solutions to address the challenges created by climate change. Studies have shown that increased diversity in the workforce has a positive impact on innovation and economic growth (Hofstra et al. 2020; Ruiz-Jiménez et al. 2016; Østergaard et al. 2011). Innovation in addressing climate change could be broadly interpreted. Proposed projects focused on areas where there is significant room for innovation are especially welcome. For example, reducing embedded carbon in industry, which accounts for 39% of global energy-related emissions (United Nations Environment Programme, 2017).

Aims and Objectives:

  1. Increase the number of PIs from *underrepresented groups
  2. Encourage research collaborations between interdisciplinary teams across the University
  3. Foster diverse and inclusive research teams in order to enhance innovation
  4. Promote research leadership and pump-prime more substantial external research applications

*The following groups are underrepresented amongst large-scale EPSRC grant holders: women; LGBT+ people, BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnic) people, and people with disabilities

Project Criteria

Each project should

  • Have a *underrepresented **academic staff member as Principal Investigator (Lecturer and above or Chancellor’s Fellows)
  • Have 50% or more *underrepresented researchers on the project team (including any external collaborator)
  • Involve a collaboration between at least two different departments, and preferably two different faculties
  • Focus on a topic related to innovative solutions for addressing climate change

**PDRAs, research, teaching and knowledge exchange staff are all welcome to apply as part of a project team. Project team members should check with their line managers that they support them in their participation in the funding call. Unfortunately for this funding call, PDRAs are not eligible to be PIs. They are welcomed to be named on the research team but they cannot be named as PI for this specific call. This is because the purpose of the funding is to facilitate applications for larger follow-on funding from EPSRC. Therefore, PIs for this STEM Equals + RKES IAA funding call must meet the eligibility criteria for EPSRC: investigators must be academic employees (lecturer, senior lecturer etc) and should normally hold a permanent academic post.​

Timeline

Thur 2nd July by 5pm: Single slide virtual introductions due (required for workshop participants)
Wed 8th July from 3-4:30pm: Live MyPlace Zoom workshop
Mon 31st Aug by 5pm: All application materials due
Thur 1st Oct: Panel decisions shared
Dec 2021: Deadline by which the funding must be spent by the successful project
